Meet our Therapist, Miranda

Written by our therapist, Miranda, MSW, RSW

Hello, I am Miranda Belsheim, MSW, RSW, a therapist with Canopy Cove Counselling, and I am so excited to be here.

I help children, youth, parents, families and individuals who are navigating life transitions, mental health concerns, trauma, and relationship difficulties, with care and expertise.  I bring more than 10 years of experience supporting children, youth, families and individuals across government, non-profit and in clinical settings.

Before joining Canopy Cove Counselling, I worked as a mental health clinician in a rural northern Albertan community, working across several school divisions supporting children, teens and their families. These experiences have shaped the way I approach therapy and have given me a deep appreciation for the unique strengths, experiences and needs of every person and family I work with.

At the heart of my work is a belief that people are resilient and full of unique strengths. With the right support, we can better understand ourselves and our children, heal from challenging experiences, and create positive and meaningful change. My goal is for each person I work with to feel seen, understood and genuinely cared for. I want you to leave therapy with a better understanding of yourself, practical tools that fit who you are, and a stronger sense of your own ability that you can navigate whatever comes next.

Individual & Parent Therapy

When working with young adults and parents, my first goal is to always build a positive and safe relationship where you are feeling seen, understood and supported. When we build trust in the therapeutic relationship we can feel safe to share our story, explore what is happening beneath the surface, and make space for meaningful change.

I use a blend of therapeutic tools, including EMDR, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Somatic approaches. Each session is tailored to each person’s individual needs and personalities as I believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy.

I support adults who may be experiencing:

  • Life transitions and identity shifts

  • Work stress and burn out

  • Parenting challenges

  • Relationship and family challenges

  • Recent or past experiences of trauma

  • Anxiety and excessive worry

  • Depression and low mood

  • Other mental health concerns

Together we will make sense of what is happening for you, find tools that will actually work for you and help you feel more like yourself.

Child, Tween & Teen Therapy

I work with children, tweens and teens from 4 to 19 years old who may be experiencing a wide range of emotional, behavioural, social or mental health challenges. These may include:

  • Trauma and adverse experiences

  • ADHD or neurodivergence

  • School difficulties

  • Anxiety and excessive worry

  • Self-esteem and confidence concerns

  • Depression and low mood

  • Anger and frustration

  • Bullying and peer relationship challenges

  • Grief and loss

  • Family changes and conflicts

  • Sibling conflict and parent-child relationships

  • Regulation and coping skills

Children don’t always have the words to express what they are experiencing. Sometimes their internal world shows up through diverse behaviours which can look like frequent meltdowns, anger and aggression, avoidance, excessive worry, challenges with friends and family, and issues at school. Everyone needs a safe place to work through their challenges, and therapy can offer just that.

Using Play Therapy, TraumaPlay, DBT, CBT, EMDR and ACT to create an approach that fits the child or teen in front of me. I believe children and teens have an incredible ability to share their stories in their own unique way whether through play, creativity, behaviours or through conversations.

My goal for therapy with young people is to build a strong, trusting relationship with both the child and the family. Together,  we can work together towards supporting the wellbeing of the whole family system. Therapy can give children and teens a safe space to understand what is happening within them, develop new ways of coping, build confidence and discover their own strengths.

Family & Couples Therapy

Relationships are incredibly important, and sometimes even the people we love most can experience periods of conflict, disconnection or change. Using Family Systems and Emotionally Focused Therapy, I support families and couples who want to strengthen their relationship and reconnect with those who matter most.

You may come for family therapy or couples counselling if communication has become challenging, a new transition or change is occurring, there has been ongoing conflict, or your family has experienced a challenging traumatic event. You may also be exploring  what comes next in your relationship or you may be trying to understand a changing family dynamic. My approach is collaborative, relational and attachment-based, where every person who comes into my room feels they have a steady and supportive place where their voice matters and where they can work towards healing together.

A Little about Myself

Outside of the therapy room, most of my time is spent with my two young daughters and husband. We love  playing games, spending time outdoors, trying new things and going on new adventures. We are also enjoying exploring our new community where we just bought a home, and we are loving living rurally while also being close to Calgary where we were born and raised.

I love to read, write, bake, try new restaurants with my friends and run. Movement has become one of my favorite coping skills when my own brain becomes busy. I enjoy travelling and trying new activities. Before having children, I backpacked through Central America and Asia twice. I am looking forward to when my girls get older and I can explore more of the world together.

I am also someone who genuinely loves learning. I get excited by new training, learning new therapeutic approaches and discovering anything that can help me grow as a therapist or improve my own and my family’s wellbeing.

I can also go from being incredibly energetic or completely exhausted; this is likely due to my own ADHD brain! Over the years, I have learned how to work with my brain, rather than against it, and that experience has given me an even greater appreciation for the importance of self-understanding, reflection, compassion and finding strategies that work for those I work with.

One of my favorite things is connecting with others and maintaining or building meaningful relationships. Sitting together talking, going for a walk, or connecting over coffee fills my cup right up; this could be one reason I really love being a therapist!

I am so grateful to be part of the Canopy Cove Counselling team and I look forward to getting to know the individuals and families who walk through our doors. If you are curious about working with me, I would love to connect over a free 15-minute consultation. You can reach out at hellp@canopycove.ca!
