Meet Our Therapist, Elizabeth
Written by our therapist, Elizabeth
Hello, and it's a pleasure to meet the person reading this page right now.
If you're on the journey of finding a therapist, I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and get to know me in this way. If we were meeting over a warm meal for the first time, I would probably want to briefly share a little about myself before getting to the good stuff.
My name is Elizabeth Gummo (MSW, RSW), and while I am new to Canopy Cove as of May 2026, I have been providing counselling services as a social worker for the past 12+ years. My work focuses on adults, and I am trained in a modality that I hold near and dear: Somatic Experiencing®.
Perhaps learning a little about who I am and how I work can support you in deciding whether we might be a good fit for your healing journey.
The Heart Behind My Practice
As often occurs in life, and in therapy, the journey to where I am now has not been linear. The story I tell myself is that this ever-changing trajectory is slowly becoming a meaningful piece of art.
My first passion was horses. I had my heart set on building a career around them, and that dream led me to Alberta. It was there that I realized my horses were not meant to be my profession. They were my therapy.
I then turned my attention toward the health sector and began taking college courses. Yet once again, I found myself being called in a different unknown direction.
One day, while driving home, a thought arrived with unexpected clarity:
"I want to be a social worker."
Like the glow of a lighthouse guiding ships safely to shore, everything seemed to fall into place. For the first time, I felt at home with a career decision. I never looked back.
As my understanding of therapy and healing has deepened, I have continued refining my practice and anchoring myself to a belief that sits at the heart of my work: all beings and systems possess an innate capacity to heal.
This belief is what continues to draw me toward learning about the nervous system and supporting clients in reconnecting with their own natural healing processes.
My Offerings (a.k.a. The Good Stuff)
I consider myself a guide.
Healing is rarely a straight road. I may have the vehicle and a map, but the journey itself belongs to you. The places we visit, the detours we take, and the pace at which we travel are influenced by your unique nervous system, needs and experiences.
Regarding the map...
I have a unique understanding of how human patterns become stuck, along with some well-developed ideas about how we can work together in the direction of healing.
I am a heartful witness.
Many of the patterns we wish to change once served an important purpose. Because of this, I approach them with curiosity and respect rather than criticism. There is no shame or judgment in this space.
Presence matters.
I offer weekly appointments to a limited number of clients at any given time so that I can bring my full attention, presence, and care to the therapeutic relationship.
What Is Not Required of You
You do not need:
To be "good at therapy"
To have all the right answers
To feel shame or judgment for involuntary responses that emerge during sessions
To agree with something simply because I suggest it
To move at anyone else's pace
To have your story organized before you arrive
You get to bring exactly who you are and exactly where you are.
A Few Things to Consider
Do you notice patterns in your life that seem to repeat themselves, despite your efforts to change them?
It is completely understandable if your answer is not, "I'm curious about these patterns." More often, people come to therapy wishing those patterns would simply stop. That's okay too! And we will leave an open seat for curiosity.
One thing I have learned is that patterns usually exist for a reason, and they don't often respond well to force.
Much like removing the lid from a freshly shaken bottle of pop, moving too quickly can create more overwhelm than relief. Sometimes we need time to build a shared language and understanding of your unique way of being before addressing the issue that brought you through the door.
Another shared human experience is our desire for relief.
While everyone's path is different, meaningful change often benefits from consistency. For many people, this may look like weekly sessions over a period of time. A commitment to the process can help create the conditions where lasting relief and healing become possible.
Stories That May Find Their Way to Me
Maybe your life looks good from the outside, but inside you feel numb, disconnected, or strangely absent from your own experience.
Maybe you've read the books, listened to the podcasts, and tried the things you "should" be doing, yet nothing seems to bring lasting relief.
Maybe you've spent years caring for everyone else while carrying burdens that no one can see.
Maybe you've lost your voice somewhere along the way and aren't quite sure how to find it again.
Maybe you've been living with the effects of chronic stress, trauma, or accumulated overwhelm and find yourself constantly on guard, shut down, exhausted, or disconnected.
Maybe there is a specific event you know has impacted your life.
Or maybe there isn't a clear memory at all, only a sense that something doesn't feel quite right.
Whatever brings you here, I believe there is wisdom in your experience, and I would be honored to help you explore it.
Before You Go
If you've read this far, thank you.
Seeking support takes courage. Whether we end up working together or whether your search leads you elsewhere, I hope you find a therapist who helps you feel seen, safe, and understood.
And if our paths do cross, I look forward to meeting the real you, not the version that has had to hold everything together, but the one underneath it all.
The one who deserves care, curiosity, and the opportunity to heal.
Until we meet,
Elizabeth
